Descripción

After the outbreak of the 1810 Revolution, critical writings against the priests' celibacy and forced cloistered life circulated and were debated in Buenos Aires. Besides, a series of plays dedicated to the same subjects were performed in those years. Those writings and plays questioned the whole disciplinary ecclesiastical order and monastic life, offering an effective discursive support to the revolutionary task of undermining the basis of legitimacy of the ancien régime. This article presents and analyzes those writings and plays, considering them to be an expression of an ancient, hitherto concealed vein of anticlerical protest which would undergo enormous development in Argentina during the nineteenth century, like elsewhere in the Euro-Atlantic world.
