Jonas Mekas (Semeniškai, 1922), a Lithuanian-born American filmmaker, has been an important figure to articulate an underground culture in New York since the sixties. Mekas has remained strong throughout his career in order to get maximum independence and to do what he has felt every moment in his life. Thus he has become one of the most brilliant filmmakers of the American avantgarde cinema and he has been able to reflect on the medium critically. Mekas, who is known for growing the genre of diary film, takes a journey that begins in the social realism and reaches the underground cinema.
