Studies of double inmunostaining clearly shoved that the ..+rjority of intpahepatic CDS+ T lymphocytes selectively coexpressed the AIN antigen. whereas no significant expression of this molecule was found on either intrabepatic CD& T lymphocytes or on peripheral blood lymphocytes of the same patients. By contrast. few and scattered liver-infiltrating AINc cells were observed in patients with chronic persistent hepatitis. Furthermore, lymphocytes from bpth peripheral blood or liver compartments did not express other activation ant&ens such as the IL-ZR and the W-R moLcc"les. These results sw?Sest that this COB+ AIM+ T cell subset may represent the main activated intrahepatic lymphoid cell population in viral CAH. u"derli"i"S the major role of this T cell subset in the pathogenesis of hepatocellular damage in this liver disease.
