from ekklēsía to koinonia  Thinking the Ontological Vocation, Hearing the Call of Liberation Eduardo Duarte     Hofstra UniversityKeynote Lecture, International Conference on Paulo Freire,University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada, May 7, 2016Link to Recording of Lecture: https://soundcloud.com/user2603690/eduardo-duarte-ubc-freire-conf-keynote-5716This presentation is organized around a close reading of the select fragments from Paulo Freire’s writing that rehearse the “ontological vocation to be more fully human.”  As a philosophical category la vocación de SER MAS is fundamental and foundational.  Yet, curiously, the category is insubstantially theorized by Freire, and all but ignored by both scholars and practitioners who have taken up Freire’s project.  What, then, might be disclosed in thinking the “ontological vocation” beyond what Freire and some critics have thought it? A listening back to the future – that is, thinking this category beyond Freire entails an exegetical hearing of the ancient words that continue to resonate therein (allí dentro) “the people’s vocation.”  Hearing allí dentro echoes from the ancient fields and vast places of the past, our orientation to the liberation project is re-placed, enabling us to receive anew the prophetic call for humanization experienced in the immediate encounter with the voice of el vecino (the neighbor).
