During the last years the University hasevolved from an institution which focusedon the study of different naturaland social phenomena to becoming thefocus of research. Th is paper shows partof the results of a research on the effectsof social changes in the work and professionallife of university teachers. Th e professionallife history has been the strategychosen to approach the changes in thelives of teachers and researchers. As a resultof studying and comparing 24 lifehistories, there appears a group of differenttopics which have different meaningsfor the participants in this research. Theiranalyses show there is an increase in stressand pressure on teachers who are forcedto carry out three completely different activities:teaching, researching and havingmanagerial positions. Th is text presentsthe situations teachers have to face in aworking context which is becoming moreand more demanding.
