Descripción

The Ucayali department has a large mammal’s diversity with 38% of the recorded species for Peru, and is one of the less studied Amazonían areas therefore with big information gaps, especially at the lower basin of Purus river at the border with Brazil. We studied the diversity of non-flying small mammals at the Concesión para Conservación Río La Novia (CCRLN) at the district and province of Purús, Ucayali department, to fulfill the information gap. We evaluated the area during the rainy and dry seasons in 2015. In each we installed four transects, each with 30 double station traps (snap trap and box trap). In addition, we used 20 Tomahawk traps and four pitfall traps with barriers. The sampling effort was of 6816 trap-night during the rainy reason and 7952 trap-night during the dry season. We registered 27 species between rodents (14 species) and marsupials (13 species). The most abundant species in rainy season were Hylaeamys perenensis (0.239) and Neacomys spinosus (0.144), and Hylaeamys perenensis (0.175) and Marmosa demerarae (0.151) during the dry season. We registered the rodent Neacomys musseri for the first time for the Ucayali department we also confirmed the presence of the rodents Oecomys trinitatis and Hylaeamys perenensis for the Basin of Purus River. Additionally, we found three undetermined species, one of Neacomys and two of Monodelphis. We also discuss the presence of potential or confirmed species for the study area. The high diversity in rodents and marsupials and the new records found highlight the research potential at the zone and the importance of the CCRLN for the biodiversity conservation.
