Contrary to what is commonly thought about Mexico City more than half of its territory is rural and dedicated to agriculture, corn, beans ,pumpkins, among other crops are mainly planting, in delegations Alvaro Obregon, Cuajimalpa, Magdalena Contreras, Milpa Alta, Tlalpan, Tláhuac and Xochimilco; in the latter two delegations is located the ANP (Natural Protected Area, from Spanish: Área Natural Protegida) “Ejidos de Xochimilco y San Gregorio Atlapulco” on this place today the Chinampa production system is still preserved, which is characterized by high productivity, however in recent years was sighted seriously threatened by the uncontrolled growth of urban stain creating havoc in this system. The maize crop has declined drastically because is no longer considered a profitable activity, being preserved only by older people, in addition to land change use, the adoption of other crops such as vegetables or ornamental plants as flowers. But today the breed conservation of native corn has gained importance since it is considered an important genetic reservoir of variability which has promoted its cultivation by agroecological techniques, as well as a monitoring program for the presence of transgenic material.
