I have chosen this focus because EFL and ESL learners, especially lower level learners, have difficulty in writing formal letters. It is a vital piece of writing for learners because in many exams such as IELTS, FCE, PET, CAE and TOEFL, they are asked to write formal letters in the writing part. Furthermore, adult learners undoubtedly need to write them in business life. Even if their English level is not high, by putting together stylistic conventions, format, phrases, grammatical structures, lexis, and punctuation, they will format the letter and as much of this is formulaic, it will be a matter of product rather than process writing. I want to focus on product approach for intermediate levels because with the help of formulaic language both students preparing for exams and business people required to deal with formal correspondence can get much better results.
