De la botiga a la boutique: gentrificación comercial en el Casc Antic de Barcelona

Abstract. The main purpose of this paper is to analyze the connection between gentrification and retail transformation in the Casc Antic. Gentrification involves commercial mutations which cause a profound change in the urban landscape. First, commercial gentrification is discussed. Second, the research methodology is described. Third, rebuilding of the Santa Caterina market is analyzed as the great engine of urban transformation of in the Casc Antic. Fourth, the results of the commercial census in the study area are discussed. In conclusion, we present a reflection on the conflict that arises between the old and new neighbors because of the new forms of retail trade.
