Abstract: This paper deals with the representation of Cretan myths inarchaeology and literature from a synchronic point of view. Through ananalysis of the works of Evans and Kazantzakis, we examine the use andmanipulation of these myths as means of human expression and as an elementof European identity. We also examine the influence that the interpretationof myths may have on the archaeological and literary reconstructions ofcertain periods, as well as on other artistic disciplines. The answer tothese questions may lie partly in the versatile nature of the myth, itspower to evoke timeless concerns and its early representation in literaturein Greece. Resumen: Este trabajo aborda desde una perspectiva sincrónica las representaciones del mito cretense en arqueología y literatura. A través de Evans y Kazantzakis indaga en los usos y apropiaciones de estos mitos como vehículo de expresión del ser humano y como construcción de la identidad europea. Igualmente, se pregunta por la influencia que las interpretaciones del mito ejercen en una época determinada sobre las reconstrucciones arqueológicas y literarias, así como sobre otras disciplinas artísticas. La naturaleza versátil del mito, su poder de evocación de inquietudes atemporales y su temprana conversión en literatura en Grecia podrían responder en parte a estos interrogantes.
