Critical Incident Interview
Three individuals who are being interviewed, the first participant is a mayor in 2004. The Second participant is a businessman who had great success in 2010 and the third participant is a school counselor who has been working with kids in a high school.
The First Interview
Name: M.U
Job Title: Mayor in 2004
I would like to ask you some questions about last position. How did you decide to become a mayor?
M.U. says that he was worried about his country, because Turkey had many military coups, which was not democratic. No one was able to have freedom of speech even different thoughts. Also, he believed that his family and his friends would lose their religious value day by day and he did not have any right to change this situation. He was working voluntarily in some organizations, which contains parties, associations that share similar ideology like he has. He gained much success there and wanted to be a person who decides for others and bigger populations (Personal communication, January 30, 2016).
Did you encounter any obstacles? If so, what did you do when faced with that obstacle?
He says that there were competitions and he did not expect the powerful opponents. He was not expecting to see power of eloquence. He started to train himself about speech persuasion and convincing skills (Personal communication, January 30, 2016).
What were the key things you did to achieve this goal?
He says that first of all believing your goal and then believing yourself then being a honest person, making plan and organizations and having great motivation (Personal communication, January 30, 2016).
Could you please tell us an example of a time when you needed to prepare a plan to become a mayor?
He says that there were huge plans before and after campaigning that all was about how to be success in election to become a mayor (Personal communication, January 30, 2016).
What was the plan in order to campaign?
He says that the party has supported him, but he needed to have a great campaign especially some part of the city, which they had been losing. He made a search to find reason, then he figured out nobody really work on there, because without them they could be able to win and he wanted to changed that situation (Personal communication, January 30, 2016).
What was the first thing you thought about, when you began the campaign?
He says that he thought that he needed to make public appearances first and then even if needs to make interviews with individuals, he would not hesitate to get closer and care about them more (Personal communication, January 30, 2016).
How did you go about preparing the campaign?
He says that the plan was working great and he hired a manager, fundraiser and treasurer, because he have been busy with interviews and public appearances and cannot control financial records also bring any founds to campaign (Personal communication, January 30, 2016).
How did you go preparing to plan campaign?
He says that he offered to go their wedding ceremonies and funerals along 3 or 4 years to introduce his self (Personal communication, January 30, 2016).
Is there any time that you thought once many things that you needed to do?
He says that definitely, he was not knowledgeable about the economical, educational status of the population and he surprised because they were poor and they do not even watch TV or reading newspapers and listening radios (Personal communication, January 30, 2016).
What did you do when you see economical and educational status?
He says that his team provided some donations, which includes wood for fireplace, food, our magazine and ours newspapers (Personal communication, January 30, 2016).
What were your thoughts with donations?
He says that if they do not starve, they would be able to read and educate themselves and see what they are loosing in value of religion, beliefs (Personal communication, January 30, 2016).
What were you trying to do in that situation?
He says that he was only trying to help them to live their life better and then he wanted to get organize in order to fight for their future together (Personal communication, January 30, 2016).
Could you please tell us that when you needed to solve any other kind of problem?
He says that there were problems were about public hospitals, which did not have any good service. Another problem was with transportation because, there were no public transportation to go school or city and people could not afford private transportations (Personal communication, January 30, 2016).
I would like to hear more about public hospitals, what was the problem with public hospitals?
He says that generally there were problems around the Turkey about health like even people have full insurance they needed to pay for doctors, medicine %20 and then people preferred to go private hospitals. Those people did not have insurance; they were able to solve their problems with bribe, even if somebody were not sick, after staying hospital just for visiting, they would get infected. Nobody had cared them, just because they did not have money (Personal communication, January 30, 2016).
What were your thoughts when you first considered that problem?
He says that he though this situation has to change; people should not pay especially when they enter from emergency room (Personal communication, January 30, 2016).
What did you do to deal with that problem?
He says that, in the beginning, he gave money from his pocket to help them, sometimes he asked some doctors to not charge them by using his political status, then find funds for those people till win the election (Personal communication, January 30, 2016).
What was the result?
He says that about election; he won but they lost in 2 towns, which he believes that was not their hand to change the result. About donations, even they lost election in those two towns; people who need help, were able to have that donation twice a week from reeve. About public hospitals; they have solved those problems after election (Personal communication, January 30, 2016).
I would like to hear more about those two towns, what was the problem that runs you to lose there?
He says that those are small towns and there are only one leader of each tribe and rest of them their family members and they support their family member. Other one was really sad because their leader had a traffic accident and they lost him, then nobody vote for new leader because they did not know him yet. So they could not solve the problem only in two towns (Personal communication, January 30, 2016).

The Second Interview
Name: D.M
Job Title: Businessman

I would like to ask you some questions about your contractor/real estates business. First of all, how did you decided to expand your company in another countries?
D.M says that there were no economical balance in Turkey; everyone was looking for opportunities outside of the country twenty years ago, and he did not want to leave his country. He was volunteer to take all risks to do international business, he shared his ideas with some friends and they suggested him to travel those countries and make observations, then he found partners from there who knows the businesses work and legal procedures, and there were two people in those countries who is partner and responsible for only sale, because there were able to speak Arabic and Turkish and their friends whom he early shared his ideas (Personal communication, January 29, 2016).
Could you please describe a time when you expand your company in another countries that you considered a success?
He says that they do business in Europe, Africa, Dubai and Iraq; Iraq was the most successful business area for my company, because after war they needed any kind of buildings, structure (Personal communication, January 29, 2016).
Did you encounter any obstacle? If so, what did you do when faced with that obstacle?
He says that the process was not an easy for him, because it took more than two years observation and especially getting touch with partners. When they the set up the company, they were five but every time something come up and they could not start business and they were wasting a lot money for travelling, hotel etc. without earning any cents, He realize that nobody was taking enough responsibilities which delays the processes, he wanted to set goals and give tasks and then some of the partners broke the agreement that was really hard time for the company, because their capital changed, they could not get considered same projects any more, so basically they were in level 5 then start over from level 3 (Personal communication, January 29, 2016).
What did you do to deal with that problem?
He says that they were able build dams, bridges in level five, in level three hey can barely build hotels, hospitals and residences that made them loose their convince, but especially he motivated himself and his partners in order to keep them in company and not let them to give up. They should handle disagreements for their benefits also they identify and utilize strengths of each partner; after all he promoted an opportunity to see some positive result which encouraged the partners (Personal communication, January 29, 2016).
What was the first thing you thought about, when you deal the problem?
He says that he thought that he should consider a small projects then there were a un-considered location come out to his mind which provides less profits but he wanted to start there immediately to earn back two years expenses at least (Personal communication, January 29, 2016).
How did you go about preparing the plan?
He says that things went better later on, because when they were five and were spending more money like staying in hotels, renting two cars. After 2 partners left, they rent a house and able to fit in one car then spent less. There were more business opportunities to make hotel, residence when compared with dams, bridges that was advantages for them. Two months later they got agreement and in a year they had three huge projects, which really had close profit to their first plans (Personal communication, January 29, 2016).
Have you think once many things that you needed to do?
He says that even he starts over, he had known about all the details that are why he did not surprised about any hard work. He just continues to raise profits by demanding (Personal communication, January 29, 2016).
What were your specific thoughts as you developed the plan?
He says that he offered to do smaller businesses, which means more afford, because he believe in that there is no value between jobs in business at the end it depends how much you make it? (Personal communication, January 29, 2016)
What was the result?
He says that impact of x-partners was really distressing but believing your goal always motivates you, people always face obstacles, the important thing is that not depending on others, being independent which protects you more, because you can control over. When the x-partners wanted to leave, he let them to go for the benefits of company, otherwise none were creative anymore. Rest of the two partners and him, worked extra and now they have bigger company (Personal communication, January 29, 2016).
I would like to hear more about how did you realize none were creative and not working hard?
He says that x-partners were doing some other businesses, they wanted to use their experiences by providing high capital, they had not discussed before agreements that they wont do actual work. That was extra financial benefits for them but for him and his other partners did not have any other choices, whatever they have, they had put on this work. When they had meetings, x-partners was promoting themselves by telling how they work hard last month and get this great results and then he did not feel comfortable, while he is not in there, why no body follow work up. He felt un-honesty and he wanted to leave and do business only by himself, but his capital was not enough. Then he told them that he wants to see some positive results in their company too and expressed other concern in next meeting, but partners immediately offer to leave, even they did not try to find a solution. Basically, x-partners wanted to show him that he couldn't do anything without them. He believes that is not ethical and after all he just wanted to get rid of them no matter what happens, but only problem seem to him that rest of partners was not ready for it. He believes that there are two challenges for him could be to convince other partners on his way and satisfy many things such as, working on task more than any time (Personal communication, January 29, 2016).

The Third Interview
Name: H.K
Job Title: High School Counselor
Could you please tell us example from the past two years when you have worked to achieve a goal?
He says that he was working in a high school in 2013 and had four students who were in their last year. His goal was to guide these four kids to help them to find best major for them in top-rated universities (Personal communication, January 29, 2016).
How did you get involved in that situation?
He says that he likes to help people and he came from similar schools that school is a charter school and they provides that service for some kids who is success and need special guidance which even includes staying in a same place together. The school management decided whom to guide them (Personal communication, January 29, 2016).
What exactly you were you trying to achieve?
He says that his goal was help those brilliant individuals to have better carrier in their life. Because they were smart who can help humanity by innovation or science (Personal communication, January 29, 2016).
What were the key things you did to achieve this goal?
He says that he believes in that being a great example as a role model, being friendly likes a family member. For example he was playing video games, go soccer, basketball, watching same movies with them, just to be closer and understand their characteristic better (Personal communication, January 29, 2016).
Did you encounter any obstacle?
He says that in the beginning, there were some problem between kids and me, because they were 15- 16 years old and he was 26 years old. There were some communication problems because of age. They could get angry in a minute then lough; their emotion was not stable which was challenge for him. Secondly, sometimes problem occurred between their families and him, they were not thinking that his guidance is not enough mature (Personal communication, January 29, 2016).
What did you do when faced with those obstacles?
He says that when he realize there is a trust problem between families with him, he get closer to them, like visiting their home, going their ceremonies, providing schedule of study plan every week. About the kids; he believes, he had super passion for any actions, ones he even bought a game levels to play with him then he could share same thing which could lead him to reach that student (Personal communication, January 29, 2016).
Could you please think of an example in that time when you needed to prepare a plan in order to do some project?
He says that there was one student in science school who is not really success in math or physics or biology. He wanted to draw with him for fun then he realize form his notebook that the student has great art skills, personally He like art drawing that's why he got his attention. He wanted to see his scratch book. Then he needed to prepare a different plan for him because he was in science school, which is quite far from art (Personal communication, January 29, 2016).
What was the first thing you thought about when you help him to go art school not engineering or science?
He says that he thought that it is unique ability not everyone has and people should do whatever they like. He doesn't have to be scientist to be a successful helpful individual for humanity (Personal communication, January 29, 2016).
What was your plan for him?
He says that he have discussed all the outcomes with his supervisor and while he took other success kids to Genius Olympics to show their projects, he would be able to help the student to show his skills there under the name of the science school, even he is not success in science. So the plan was taking him at least some certificate in Olympics to help his attendance to in art school (Personal communication, January 29, 2016).
What was the result?
He says that he just wanted to see his student are success in where they would be happy and one of them studies at ASU now, two of them in UCLA and last one in SFAI. They are still keeping in touch with him and he believes that his students will find a way to guide some others in future (Personal communication, January 29, 2016).
