Ways to Boost the Speaking Competence Using Imagery, Holism and CreActivity in the Language Learning and Teaching Process

1

Introduction on Context • This presentation has been created exclusively for educational purposes at the 2013 Universidad Autónoma de Baja California International Language Convention. Some of the pictures on the slides were taken from the Facebook page of the Ministry of Education of Costa Rica (MEP en imágenes, MEP - Costa Rica) . The other pictures were taken by the presenter in his classes with students’ consent to depict actual learning experiences and be able to help fellow ELT professionals visualize holistic and cooperative learning environments. 2

WAYS TO BOOST THE SPEAKING COMPETENCE USING IMAGERY AND CREACTIVITY

9

Main Objectives • To engage participants and teaching professionals in practical approaches on how to better customize language instruction. • To boost the speaking competence through the use of imagery and creactivity.

• To discuss new taxonomic dimensions in language learning paradigms. 10

IMAGERY:

It is the use of vivid and descriptive language to add depth to memorable

and meaningful learning experiences. It appeals to human senses to deepen into understanding.

SYNESTHESIA: see sound and smell colors . Synesthesia (also spelled synæsthesia or synaesthesia, plural synesthesiæ orsynæsthesiæ), from the ancient Greek σύν (syn), "together," and αἴσθησις (aisthēsis), “SENSATION”," is a neurological condition in which STIMULATION of one sensory or cognitive pathway leads to automatic, involuntary experiences in a second sensory or cognitive pathway.

Medical Dictionary synesthesia syn·es·the·sia (sĭn'ĭs-thē'zhə) n. A condition in which one type of stimulation evokes the sensation of another, as when the hearing of a sound produces the visualization of a color. A sensation felt in one part of the body as a result of stimulus that is applied to another, as in referred pain, pleasure or otherwise. 13

.

“Colored hearing and PHOTISMS” A condition in which one type of sensory stimulation creates perception in another sense. The most common. form of synesthesia is called "colored hearing," where a person experiences a visual sensation when receiving an auditory signal (for example, hearing the musical tone C and seeing the color red). Although tone-color relationships are not identical for all people, there are general uniformities: the deeper a musical note, the darker the color. Similar COLOR PERCEPTIONS, called photisms, may accompany sensations of taste, touch, pain, smell, or temperature. Synesthesia has been used as a literary device by poets as diverse as Edgar Allan Poe, Arthur Rimbaud, Hart Crane, and Dame Edith Sitwell.

ICONOGRAPHY .

Iconography is the branch of art history which studies the identification, description, and the interpretation of the content of images: the subjects depicted, the particular compositions and details used to do so, and other elements that are distinct from artistic style. The word iconography comes from the Greek εἰκών ("image") and γράφειν ("to write"). 15

Savin’ Me by Nickelback • Prison gates won't open up for me • On these hands and knees I'm crawlin' • Oh, I reach for you Well I'm terrified of these four walls • These iron bars can't hold my soul in • All I need is you 32

• Come please I'm callin' • And oh I scream for you Hurry I'm fallin', I'm fallin' • Show me what it's like To be the last one standing • And teach me wrong from right • And I'll show you what I can be 33

• • • • • • • • •

And say it for me, say it to me And I'll leave this life behind me Say it if it's worth saving me Heaven's gates won't open up for me With these broken wings I'm fallin' And all I see is you These city walls ain't got no love for me I'm on the ledge of the eighteenth story And oh I scream for you
