What are the three (3) main types

1. Simple Sentences

A Complex Sentence

A complex sentence may also contain:
an independent clause and
at least one phrase.

A phrase is a group of words beginning with a preposition, but without a verb

A complex sentence is therefore a simple sentence with extra parts added to the main clause. For example:

The dogs bark while you are at school.

Children play without a care in the world.

These sentences are complex because they begin with an independent clause and then have a dependent clause attached.

The dogs bark while you are at school.
Children play without a care in the world.

The orange sections are clauses, not phrases, because they contain verbs.




Complex Sentences
Examples:
Independent clause followed by a dependent clause

The plumber is coming because the pipe has burst.
It will probably rain as they go out for lunch.
She believed in fairytales, when she was younger.
There was a lot of damage, after the cyclone hit the town.
Complex Sentences
Examples:
Sometimes you can reverse the order to vary your sentence structure:
A dependent clause followed by an independent clause

Because the pipe has burst, the plumber is coming.
As they go out for lunch, it will probably rain.
When she was younger, she believed in fairytales.
After the cyclone hit the town, there was a lot of damage.
Complex Sentences
Examples:
Independent clause followed by a phrase (a group of words that starts with a preposition but does not have a verb)

The plumber is coming at ten o'clock.
I parked my bike behind the shed.
I ate my ice-cream with a spoon.
Shae was skipping on the footpath.

A sentence can consist of a single clause or several clauses.

When a sentence is a single clause, it is called a simple sentence (and the clause is called an independent clause because it makes sense on its own).

A sentence must contain at least one independent clause.

Clauses
A clause is a group of words containing a subject and verb which forms part of a sentence.
