Descripción

This paper addresses the experiences and reflections arising from the Project titled “Links between Social Archaeology and the Ollagüe Indigenous Community” (Second Region, Chile), whose main objective was to promote the value of cultural heritage of this area, in addition to improve working relationships between the Leandro Bravo V. Museum, the indigenous community and researchers. While carrying out this project we took a series of organizational steps in an attempt to improve working relationships between archaeologists and the community. We debated cultural heritage policies, conservation and protection issues, as well as tourism, advertisement and the management of cultural resources by the local community. Three lines of action were proposed: First, improving the museum’s exposition hall. Second, holding training workshops on pre-history and history, indigenous legisla- tion, ecology and ethno tourism.Third, the creation of an open forum to discuss various aspects related to cultural heritage. We hope these measures will create a space for dialogue among the interested parties, stimulating the development of a “social archaeology”. Only in this way, Chilean ethnic groups can have strong participation in our society.
