Descripción

Strauss considers that the vitality of the Western world lays in the existing tension between reason (Athens) and revelation ( Jerusalem). This article analyses the possible relationship that can be established between them: subordination of one or the other, or a synthesis. It also examines the causes that may explain why Strauss admits the existence of both, but opts for Athens, i.e. his gnoseological skepticism, his partial acceptation of the revelation (limited to the Ancient Testament), his conviction about the current need of a return to classical wisdom, etc. Straussian modern option for Athens also means for him the defenseand primacy of philosophy. René Girard, although shares with Strauss the view that the decisive influence of religion in shaping modern Western civilization, considers that it cannot be jugded univocally, and so itshould to be taken into account its possitive elements, like the primacy of charity over law.  Strauss, who does not pay any serious attention to the New Testament, is unable to share girardian considerations.
