The purpose of this study was to evaluate if the use of psichotropic medicines is associated with an increased fall risk. Moreover, we intended to study: (a) which are the most widely used psychotropics in a nursing home; (b) which is the associated fall risk for each drug; (c) if there is a chage in the fall risk depending on the number of medicines. A nested case control was used using a cohort of polypharmacy nursing home residents. Cases were defined as those falling in the preceding 16 months (since August 2014 - December 2015), and controls were found for the same period. Information was extracted from the medical histroy by a nurse and a pharmacist, considering oly medicines taken prior to the fall. The Odds Ratio was estimated for each medicine (CI 95%). Among 22 patients (9 cases and 13 controls), a total of 38 medicines with fall-potential risk were found. On average, patients took 12 medicines (SD=5.57) but the fall risk increased abruptly when taking 3 or more psychotropics (OR= 2.667 [0.423-16.826]). This paper describes ongoing research. Therefore at the moment, the sample size reached does not enable presenting significant associations. Nonetheless, preliminary data indicate the following trends: quetiapine: OR=4.5 [0.730-27.739]; atypical antipsichotics: OR=3.2 [0.540-18.980]; long-acting benzodiazepins: OR=6.0 [0.509-70.668], consistent with published literature.
