Carlos Fuentes Carlos Fuentes was born in Panama on November 11th, 1928, but he has the Mexican nationality. His father was a diplomatic, and he spent his childhood in various American cities: Montevideo, Rio de Janeiro, Washington DC, Santiago de Chile, Quito and Buenos Aires, a city where his father arrives in 1934 as counselor of the Embassy of Mexico. Carlos Fuentes spent the summers in Mexico City, studying in schools to keep the language and learn the history of his country. He lived in Santiago de Chile (1940-1944) and Buenos Aires where he was influenced by notable personalities of the American cultural sphere. He arrived in Mexico at age 16 and entered the school at Centro Universitario Mexico. It began as a journalist to the magazine “Hoy” and got first place in the literary competition of Colegio Frances Morelos. He graduated in law at the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico and economics at the Institute of International Studies in Geneva.

He was ambassador of Mexico in France as a tribute to his father in 1975, but he quits 2 years later as protest by the designation of Gustavo Diaz Ordaz as ambassador in Spain. He wrote the scripts for the movies “Las Dos Elenas”, “El Gallo de Oro” (alongside Gabriel Garcia Marquez), “Un Alma Pura” “Ignacio” “El mexicano” and “Gringo Viejo” among the most important.

Novels His most important novels are “La region mas transparente”, “La muerte de Artemio Cruz”, “Aura”, “Cambio de piel”, “Terra nostra”, “Gringo Viejo”, La Silla del Aguila”,”La voluntad y la fortuna” and many more.

Stories and tales His most important are “Chac Mool”, “Cantar de los ciegos”, “Agua quemada”, “La frontera de cristal” and “El hijo prodigo”

Plays He also wrote the plays “Todos los gatos son pardos”, “El tuerto es rey”, “Los reinos originarios”, “orquideas a la luz de la luna”, “Ceremonias al alba”. He composed the opera “Santa Anna” about the Mexican politician Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna.

Prizes He has received the prizes: Premio Nacional de Literatura, Premio Internacional Romulo Gallegos, Premio Cervantes de Literatura, La Legion de honor de Napoleon, Premio Principe de Asturias, Medalla Picasso de la Unesco y many more, Carlos Fuentes is a really pride of Mexico.
