Descripción

This paper is based on the extensive excavation work in various settlements in recent years, some of which have provided us with a large ceramic corpus from between the 6th and 10th centuries A.D., which are essential for making headway in our knowledge of early medieval pottery in the Basque Country. The ceramic study presented here has used two different levels of analysis: a micro one and a macro one. The first level of analysis—at the micro level—studies each of the excavation sites selected separately, bearing in mind that some of them can be grouped into culturally homogeneous spaces from a ceramic point of view, as is the case of the Plains of Alava. The second level of analysis (macro) conceives the entire territory as a system made up of different ceramic records that interact with each other, in order to create a coherent general discourse. In short, although each site has its ceramic particularities, one can observe some general trends that have made it possible to establish three large ceramic periods (1. The end of "roman productions"; 2. The predominance of "coarsewares"; 3. The spread of "redwares" and the emergence of "paintedwares") which enable us to recreate the production cycles and historical processes over a wider territory. To do so, priority has inevitably been given to production and consumption since both have a decisive influence in transforming the ceramic record.Key words: reference sites, coarsewares, redwares, production strategies, social demand.
