Descripción

Habitat loss and fragmentation are deterministic processes considered one of the main factors leading to the extinction of species, as they cause the reduction of population size, making them more sensitive to stochastic processes of environmental, demographic and genetic type. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of habitat fragmentation on wild populations of Cercocebus atys lunulatus in the forest remnants of Ghana and Ivory Coast in order to establish the best scenario for the conservation of white-naped mangabey in the future. A review of the literature was conducted in order to obtain information about location, species biology, habitat and potential threats for the species, which is used afterwards to perform a Population Viability Analysis (PVA) with the program VORTEX, where scenarios that comprehended deterministic effects, stochastic, or a combination of both, on populations of small and large size and in a continuous or a fragmented habitat, assessing the probability of persistence, population growth, number of individuals and genetic diversity of C. a. lunulatus after the years of simulation. The results show that wild populations of C. a. lunulatus need at least a total of 5000 individuals initial size to ensure their persistence in the near future, along with the establishment of a continuous population. Similarly, the conservation and survival of the species in these countries can only be achieved if quickly ceases habitat degradation. If the annual degradation of habitat reaches or overcomes 4%, the populations of white-naped mangabey in Ghana and Ivory Coast are destined to become extinct in less than 30 years. Keywords: conservation, habitat loss, fragmentation, extinction, PVA, VORTEX, Cercocebus atys lunulatus, Ghana, Ivory Coast.
