Resumen Durante el año académico 2013-2014 se realizó un análisis de la colección para determinar la representación temática y edad de los recursos impresos y digitales. Este ejercicio permitió realizar un reconocimiento del acervo de ambas colecciones, pero en particular la colección digital de la cual no se tenía datos concretos de su alcance temático. En el proceso participó todo el personal destacado en la Sala de Referencia de ambos turnos diurno y nocturno. El análisis utilizo la totalidad de los registros bibliográficos catalogados de la colección de referencia y una muestra de los registros bibliográficos de la base de datos Gale Virtual Reference. Los hallazgos significativos indican que la colección impresa requiere de inmediata revisión para descarte y actualización de las fuentes en la todas las disciplinas. La colección electrónica actualiza y aumenta en una proporción mínima a la colección impresa.

Metodología El personal de la Sala de Referencia inicio un proceso de evaluación de la colección con el objetivo de conocer el estado de la misma con el propósito de prepararla para los retos y necesidades académicas actuales. El proyecto de evaluación se dividió en dos partes: la primera dedicada a la obtención de datos de las colecciones impresa y electrónica; la segunda se dedicó a analizar y comparar ambas colecciones. La primera parte se dedicó a localizar los registros disponibles de las bases de datos Horizon, para la colección impresa y los listados de bases de datos Gale Virtual Reference y CRC Netbase para los recursos digitales. Se solicitó a los administradores del sistema Horizon un informe que separara todos los recursos disponibles en la colección de referencia de la Biblioteca Víctor M. Pons Gil. Para las colecciones electrónicas se solicitó a las compañías Cengage Learning y Systems Links los registros de las bases de datos suscritas Gale Virtual Reference y CRC NetBase. El análisis de los datos se limitó a los informes suministrados por el Sistema Horizon, y las listas de títulos de Cengage, debido a que los registros de CRC Press no representaban la totalidad de los recursos en suscripción de UPR. El proceso de evaluación temática consistió de evaluar los registros de ambos sistemas por el año de publicación y por la clasificación temática. En el caso de la base de datos Gale Virtual Reference se localizaron los números de clasificación para cada uno de los registros debido a que la compañía no cuenta con la clasificación de Biblioteca del Congreso para cada título. El personal de la Sala de Referencia localizó el 96% de los números de clasificación de los registros, lo que representa una muestra significativa del contenido de la base de datos.

Resultados La colección de Referencia cuenta con un inventario de fuentes impresas compuesta por 6,266 títulos y 13,463 volúmenes y una base de datos de obras de referencia digital llamada Gale Virtual Reference con un total de 2,941 títulos. Otras bases de datos con un contenido de referencia a menor escala son: CRC NetBase, Biography Resource Center de Gale, Literature Resource Center de Gale y Modern Language Assocition Bibliography.

Tanto el área impresa como la digital cuentan con una representación temática en casi todas las áreas del conocimiento. Las clasificaciones con mayor representación en la colección son: P – Literatura, Q-Ciencias Puras, Z-Ciencias de la Información, H-Ciencias Sociales, G-Geografía y Recreación, B-Filosofía, Psicología y Religión y N-Bellas Artes. Las clasificaciones con menor representación son J-Ciencias Políticas, K-Derecho, V - Ciencias Militares, U- Ciencia Naval, S-

Agricultura. La clasificación M-Música no está representada en la colección debido a que la biblioteca cuenta con la Sala de Héctor Campos Parsi dedicada al tema de música.

La edad de la colección impresa es 41 años con un año promedio que data de 1973. Las clasificaciones más antiguas son: F-Historia de América (1924), Z Ciencias de la Información (1967), E-Historia de los Estados Unidos y N-Bellas Artes (1968). Las clasificaciones más actualizadas son: R-Medicina (1988) y Q Ciencias Puras (1983)

La colección digital tiene una edad de 8 años y la media en año es 2006. La mayoría de las clasificaciones son de la primera década del 2000. La clasificación L-Educación registró una media en año de 2008 convirtiéndose en la más actualizada. Las clasificaciones C- Historia del Mundo Antiguo, E-Historia de Estados Unidos y F-Historia de América registraron una media de año de 2004 convirtiéndose en las más antiguas.

La colección digital complementa y actualiza a la impresa en algunas áreas temáticas como H- Ciencias Sociales y Q-Ciencias Puras. Aunque el área de P- literatura es fuerte en ambas colecciones, la colección impresa supera a la digital en los temas de literatura española. La colección digital está limitada en las áreas A-Generalidades, C-Historia Antigua, F-Historia de América, NBellas Artes y S-Agricultura. En cuestión idiomática la colección digital tiene una representación modesta de obras en español con una cantidad aproximada de 200 títulos en temas de ciencias y salud. En la colección digital abundan las obras de referencia cuyo contenido abarca una profundidad dirigida a un público general escolar, aunque pueden encontrarse títulos dirigidos a audiencias más especializadas o técnicas.

Conclusión y recomendaciones La colección impresa requiere una selección para descarte en la mayoría de las áreas del conocimiento, sin embargo se recomienda una selección cuidadosa de obras publicadas en español en los temas de filosofía, historia antigua, ciencias sociales y literatura española, debido a la pobre calidad de la producción científica actualizada en estas áreas. La colección impresa necesita fortalecer las obras generales y las disciplinas que cubren las ciencias puras ya que adolece contenido actualizado para apoyar las necesidades del currículo de los departamentos de academicos. La colección digital expande y fortalece la colección impresa en algunas áreas de forma modesta. Una de las limitaciones de la colección digital es la vigencia, en este momento el año más reciente data del 2010 y corre el riesgo de tornarse obsoleta en poco tiempo. Otro aspecto a considerar es la necesidad de crecimiento en la colección mediante la evaluación y selección de nuevos títulos en áreas que apoyen al currículo. .
