AFRICA’S ELECTRICITY ENERGY MIX
Presented at Power and Electricity Africa 2012 By Honourable Grain Malunga FIMMM Sandton Convention Centre, Johannesburg
ABSTRACT Africa power energy mix can be achieved taking into account cost effective means of power generation. The following energy mix is possible: • North and West Africa: oil and gas, wind and solar energy • African Rift Valley Countries: hydropower, geothermal, wind and solar energy • Southern Africa countries: cogeneration (hydro + biomas), oil and gas, coal, solar and wind energy
AFRICAN POWER AND ELECTRICITY ENERGY MIX
Hydropower potential is concentrated in sub Saharan Africa. Oil and gas reserves are concentrated in the north and west Almost all of Africa's coal reserves are in the south. Geothermal resources are largely in the Red Sea Valley and the Rift Valley Cogeneration using biomass from bagasse Much of Africa is well exposed to sunlight -- solar energy Wind energy can be developed along coastal areas of west Africa and Southern Africa .

African Energy Development Agenda
Finance electricity generation and supply projects through national budget Regional Interconnectivity should be a must Energy efficiency measures: energy saver bulbs, solar heaters, off peak electricity use Appropriate policy and legal framework to remove barriers for development of renewable energy generation and supply A well balanced energy mix: hydro power, fossil fuels, geothermal power, nuclear energy, solar power, wind power, bio-fuels
CONCLUSION • North and West Africa: • Oil and gas, Solar energy, Hydropower, and nuclear energy, wind energy
• Eastern Africa: • Oil and gas, biofuel, geothermal, wind energy, solar energy, nuclear energy
• Central Africa: • Hydropower, biofuel, wind energy
• Southern Africa: • Coal, hydropower, biofuel, nuclear energy, wind energy, solar energy
