21 ADDITIONAL MEASURES Measures Exclusively for Extrasensory Research Differential Interviews for ESP The following differential interviews for telepathic, clairvoyant, and psychic empathic experiences were developed by the author, were utilized in private practice, an can be utilized as clinicianrated/assisted self-reports, informant-reports, or clinician-reports that can assesses veridical extrasensory phenomenology against wellknown symptoms of schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders (i.e. phenomenology versus symptomology). These measures were designed to assist clinicians in identifying veridical extrasensory experiences versus purported extrasensory experiences with psychotic features. These measures are partly inspired by the Telepathy and Paranormal Interview (TPI) developed by Greyson (1977), an openended 25-item interview given to all patients admitted into psychiatric services at the University of Virginia Hospital during a 3-month period. The TPI is comprised of 8 questions to assess the extent of psychic experiences, 8 questions designed to elicit Schneider’s First Rank Symptoms of Schizophrenia related to paranormal experiences (i.e. auditory hallucinations somatic hallucination, passivity experiences, delusional perception, and thought withdrawal, insertion, and broadcasting), and 8 questions from the MMPI F Scale (Validity Scale), and 1 screening question for the study that inquiries into the patient’s claims of telepathic ability. The results of this study found that Schneider’s first rank symptoms discriminated schizophrenics more reliably than other paranormal experiences. In addition, schizophrenic

449

patients subscribed to each of the MMPI F Scale items more frequently than non-schizophrenics.

Frequency of Use These measures were designed to be utilized during psychological or psychiatric intake to assist in determining the best course of patient treatment. These measures are not designed to track change in psychotic symptoms over time, but may be useful for this purpose.

Telepathic Experiences Differential Interview - (TEDI) The TEDI is a 16-item measure consisting of (9) questions to identify Schneider’s First Rank Symptoms of Schizophrenia (FRS) (e.g. thought insertion, though withdrawal, thought broadcasting, etc.), and (2) questions from the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory F Scale (MMPI). Both of these sets of questions are included because they can assist the clinician in identifying abnormal factors and these questions have been slightly altered in a manner that negates veridical telepathic phenomenology. In addition, the measure includes (5) questions that pertain to veridical telepathic phenomena that are labeled as signs of “Possible Telepathy” (PT). In private practice, the measure has yielded consistent results and validity. However, further testing of this measure’s reliability and validity are required.

Example: Self-Report

5.

Do you ever feel that your thoughts are somewhat influencing people you know to do or think what you need them to do or think? (PT:TI)

6.

Do you ever seem to faintly hear the thoughts of people you know in your own mind? (PT: TC) 12. Do you ever vividly hear other people in your own mind that are talking to each other, as though they are standing right next to you, or are on the phone with you? (FRS: AH) 13. Do you ever vividly hear someone in your own mind that is continuously commenting negatively on everything that you do? (FRS: AH) 14. differentiation. FRS: Schneider’s First Rank Symptoms of Schizophrenia (AH: Auditory Hallucinations), (TI: Thought Insertion), (TB: Thought Broadcasting), (TW: Thought Withdrawal), (MV: Made Volition), (MF: Made Feeling), (MI: Made Impulse). MMPI: Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory F Scale Items. PT: Possible Telepathy (TC: Telepathic Cognition, TI: Telepathic Interaction, TS: Telepathic Simulation [D: Telepathic Simulation Dream]).

Scoring and Interpretation Each item on the measure is answered by a “yes” or a “no” and can include a 5-point scale (0 = none or not at all; 1 = slight or rarely, less than a day or two; 2 = mild or several days; 3 = moderate or more than half the days; and 4 = severe or nearly every day). Any questions answered “yes” or that receives a rating of slight (i.e. 1) or greater from the FRS or MMPI serves as an indication of psychotic features or the presence of experience intensity exaggeration (i.e. vivid quality vs. faint or fragmented quality). Any PT questions answered “yes” should be viewed as a possible sign of veridical telepathic experiences and not as psychotic symptoms. However, any PT questions answered “yes” in conjunction with questions answered “yes” from the FRS or MMPI should be dismissed, at least until treatment has completely resolved psychotic symptoms, if applicable (i.e. acute psychosis).

Clairvoyant Experiences Differential Interview - (CEDI) The CEDI is a 44-item measure consisting of (8) questions to identify Schneider’s First Rank Symptoms of Schizophrenia (FRS) (e.g. thought insertion, though withdrawal, thought broadcasting, etc.), (11) questions from the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), (6) questions from the Dissociative Experiences Scale (DES), and (2) questions from a mail survey utilized in Greyson, 1977 (MSQ) in combination with various aforementioned question types. In regard to the FRS and MMPI, both of these sets of questions are included because they can assist the clinician in identifying abnormal factors, and these

questions have been slightly altered in a manner that negates veridical clairvoyant phenomenology. In addition, the measure includes (17)

452

CLINICAL PARAPSYCHOLOGY

questions that pertain to veridical clairvoyant phenomena that are labeled as signs of “Possible Clairvoyance” (PC). In private practice, the measure has yielded consistent results and validity. However, further testing of this measure’s reliability and validity are required. Example: Self-Report

Special Note: Some of these items have been slightly altered to include inaccurate telepathic phenomenology and elaboration to assist in differentiation. In addition, some of these items have been slightly altered e.g. replacing “people” with “spirits” and some questions are combinations of similar questions from more than one measure. FRS: Schneider’s First Rank Symptoms of Schizophrenia (AH: Auditory Hallucinations), (TI: Thought Insertion), (TB: Thought Broadcasting), TW: Thought Withdrawal), MV: Made Volition), MF: Made Feeling), MI: Made Impulse), (SP: Somatic Passivity). PC: Possible Clairvoyance (CC: Clairvoyant Cognition [AD: with anxiety disorder}, {RV: Remote Viewing}, [MM: Mental Mediumship], [RC/P: Retro Cognition/Psychometry], (SG: Spirit Guide], [PD: Precognitive Dream]), (CI: Clairvoyant Interaction [TM: Trance Mediumship or Channeling], [A: Automatism], [X: Xenoglossy [PM: Physical Mediumship], [PA: Psychopompic Activity]), (CS: Clairvoyant Simulation [I: Input], [O: Output], [OBE: Out-ofBody Experience if no other dissociative scoring]). MMPI: Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory Items (AH: Auditory Hallucinations), (PDIS: Perceptual Disturbance), (PD: Paranormal Delusion), (SO: Suspicion of Others), (VH: Visual Hallucinations), (PI: Persecutory Ideas), (D: Dissociation), (F, F Scale). 456

CLINICAL PARAPSYCHOLOGY

Scoring and Interpretation Each item on the measure is answered by a “yes” or a “no” and can include a 5-point scale (0 = none or not at all; 1 = slight or rarely, less than a day or two; 2 = mild or several days; 3 = moderate or more than half the days; and 4 = severe or nearly every day). Any questions answered “yes” or that receives a rating of slight (i.e. 1) or greater from the FRS, MMPI, DES, or question number (7) serves as an indication of psychotic features or the presence of experience intensity exaggeration (i.e. vivid quality vs. faint or fragmented quality). Any PC questions answered “yes” should be viewed as the possible sign of veridical clairvoyant experiences and not as psychotic symptoms. However, any PC questions answered “yes” in conjunction with questions answered “yes” from the FRS, MMPI, DES, or question number (7) should be dismissed, at least until treatment has completely resolved psychotic symptoms, if applicable (i.e. acute psychosis). If only PC questions are answered “yes,” then question number (44) should be ignored.

Empathic Experiences Differential Interview - (EEDI) The EEDI is a 20-item measure consisting of (3) questions to identify Schneider’s First Rank Symptoms of Schizophrenia (FRS) (e.g. thought insertion, thought broadcasting, etc.), and (5) questions from the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality (MMPI). Both of these sets of questions are included because they can assist the clinician in identifying abnormal factors and these questions have been slightly altered in a manner that negates veridical empathic phenomenology. In addition, the measure includes (6.5) questions that pertain to veridical empathic phenomena that are labeled as signs of “Possible Psychic Empathy” (PPE), and (1) question that pertains to veridical telepathic phenomena labeled as signs of “Possible Telepathy” (PT). Lastly, there are (4.5) questions from the Emotional Contagion Scale (ECS) (Doherty, 1997), that can assist in differentiating non-psychic empathic experiences from psychic empathic experiences. In private practice, the measure has yielded consistent results and validity.

457

(PPE:EC) 18. Does watching the fearful faces of victims in the news make you try to imagine how they might be feeling? (ECS) 19. Do you ever feel that strangers are inserting emotions or thoughts into your mind that you know are not your own? (FRS:TI) 20. Do you ever feel that someone is forcing you feel or do things by hypnotizing you? (MMPI)

Special Note: Some of these items have been slightly altered to include inaccurate empathic phenomenology and elaboration to assist in differentiation. FRS: Schneider’s First Rank Symptoms of Schizophrenia (TB: Thought Broadcasting), (TI: Thought Insertion), (MV: Made Volition), (MF: Made Feeling), (MI: Made Impulse). MMPI: Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory: F Scale Items and Dysfunctional Negative Emotion (I: Irritability), (F/W: Fear and Worry), (S: Sadness). PPE: Possible Psychic Empathy: (EI: Empathic Interaction), (ES: Empathic Simulation [I: Input], [O: Output], (EC: Empathic Cognition) (EMS: Emotional Sensitivity [indicative of a need for co-diagnosis]). PT: Possible Telepathy (TS: Telepathic Simulation [D: Dream]). ECS: Emotional Contagion Scale more associated with emotional than cognitive modes of non-psychical empathy.

Scoring and Interpretation Each item on the measure is answered by a “yes” or a “no” and can include a 5-point scale (0 = none or not at all; 1 = slight or rarely, less than a day or two; 2 = mild or several days; 3 = moderate or more than

459

half the days; and 4 = severe or nearly every day). Any questions answered “yes” or that receives a rating of slight (i.e. 1) or greater from the FRS or question number (20) serves are an indication of psychotic features or the presence of experience intensity exaggeration (i.e. vivid quality vs. faint or fragmented quality). Any questions answered “yes” or that receives a rating of slight (i.e. 1) or greater from the MMPI: F/W/S/I serves as an indication of Dysfunctional Negative Emotion. Any PPE questions answered “yes” should be viewed as the possible sign of veridical empathic experiences and not as psychotic symptoms. If the PT question is answered “yes,” this should be viewed as the possible sign of veridical telepathic experiences and not as psychotic symptoms. However, any PPE or PT questions are answered “yes” in conjunction with questions answered “yes” from the FRS or question number (20) should be dismissed, at least until treatment has completely resolved psychotic symptoms, if applicable (i.e. acute psychosis). In addition, any ECS questions answered “yes” should be viewed as signs of emotional contagion rather than as psychic empathic experiences.

Final Note In regard to chronic psychosis, clinicians should weigh the pros and cons of acknowledging possible extrasensory perception and engaging patients in experimental studies. Cons include possible impediment in treatment goals and problems such as securing patient’s cooperation, the limiting effects of attentional problems, distractibility, autistic response, etc. along with the likelihood of negative scoring due to the high levels of anxiety associated with those suffering from various psychoses (Ullman, 1977). Clinical judgment should guide decision making in all cases.

460

Psychical Profiling Assessment Basic – (PPA-B) The following 80-item assessment considers how one mentally, emotionally, and physically interacts with their environment and other individuals; whereby revealing how one psychically interacts with their environment and other individuals. This assessment identifies the most probable extrasensory phenomena the individual has recently experienced, and where their potential lies in regard to possible enhancement. This assessment was developed by the author, was utilized in private practice, and can be utilized as clinicianrated/assisted self-reports, informant-reports, or clinician-reports.

21 | ADDITIONAL MEASURES

Scoring and Interpretation The majority of the items on this measure are answered by a 5-point scale to determine how often an individual engages in certain attributes including behavioral, temperamental, emotional and mental (0 = never/yearly; 1 = every six months; 2 = monthly; 3 = weekly; and 4 = daily/hourly). The minority of questions are answered “yes” or “no.” In this case, 4 = yes; 0 = no. These questions help identify unconscious and conscious processes in the individual’s day-to-day that appear to be psi-conducive to certain specific extrasensory types. In other words, the clinician should focus on what the individual does on a daily basis, as conscious and unconscious habit (i.e. personal, social, vocational, and avocational) will provide the most likely extrasensory type experienced recently, and the most advantageous extrasensory type to pursue for treatment, or enhancement, currently. This assessment can also be answered based on the individual’s perceptions of him or herself in a prior year to identify extrasensory types of experiences in the past.

Reliability Reliability compared to MBTI: MBTI is less reliable because it asks generalized questions that do not focus on frequency, that can shift day to day, week to week, and only provides two options and no alternatives between those two options. However, the PPA-B asks questions pertaining to recent time periods (i.e. how often do you…? Daily, weekly, monthly, etc.), and has few Y-N questions; both of which increase the reliability of the PPA-B. If an individual reports a MBTI result that is different than their PPA result, this could also be due to a minor percentage fluctuation (e.g. 5-10-points, which will be shown with the PPA-B (e.g. Type White “35” and Type Purple “30”), but the MBTI online (i.e. which is how many individuals take the MBTI these days) will only show the highest scoring (e.g. #1 ENFP-shown, #2 INFP-not shown). Due to minor deviations, the result will be different (e.g. Type Purple “35” and Type White “30”), and where the highest

score is INFP and the second highest score is ENFP, which is not shown (e.g. #1 INFP, #2 ENFP). In addition, results may vary based on the date the MBTI was initially taken (e.g. last year) and whether it was conducted by a trained professional or if it was an automated online assessment. In these cases, minor or even major fluctuations may occur throughout the year since the initial MBTI assessment. Because of all of these factors, it is best if the clinician conducts a new MBTI assessment insession to compare the PPA-B and MBTI results appropriately, or simply refer to the PPA-B results exclusively to assist in identifying recently experienced phenomena and/or the most advantageous extrasensory type to pursue for treatment, or enhancement, currently.
