This paper analyses the links between oil exploration and exploitation and the development of a new phase of British imperialism in southwest Persia in the early twentieth century. It argues that the d'Arcy and Anglo-Persian oil companies were regarded by the government in London as agents of imperialism, charged with a civilizing and humanitarian imperial mission in the making. Exploring British perceptions of, and plans for, the Bakhtiyari tribe and their lands, this paper proposes that " oil imperialism " constituted the most radical and violent form of British imperialism in this area of Persia, and that the underlying aim was the creation of a productive " oil land " and the transformation of the nomadic Bakhtiyaris into colonial subjects.
