The unique property of this antenna design is no such antennas with the ability to achieve electronically switch up to five operating bands [3, 6, 7]. A square patch loaded with a hexagonal slot with extended slot arms achieved a reconfigurable dual frequency microstrip antenna using varactor diodes [3]. Paper [6] discussed, a two-layer microstrip antenna fed using a coplanar waveguide attainable reconfigurability of the dual frequency band, 8.73–10.95 GHz and 7.68–9.73GHz. This paper discussed on a beam steering radial line slot array antenna with reconfigurable frequency operating up to four bands only [7]. Dimension wise, the proposed 38 x 38mm antenna is small in size compared to the traditional counterparts that could perform similar features [1].

Abstract— A novel compact antenna with the ability of reconfigurable multi-band applications is proposed. This achieved by integrate the compact 38mm x 38mm antenna with three RF switches. The activation of particular RF switches arrangement would then determine the frequency flexibility. The presented antenna competents to execute up to five multi-bands. The operating frequencies are band 1 (2.72 - 11.8GHz), band 2 (2.4 – 4GHz, 5.3 - 11.6GHz), band 3 (2.7 - 6.5GHz, 7.1 – 11.6GHz), band 4 (2.7 – 4.4GHz, 5.2 – 6.5GHz, 7.1 – 11.7GHz) and band 5 (2.6 – 3.5GHz, 4.8 – 7.0GHz, 7.4GHz – 11.5GHz). The presented antenna generates a proficient divisive radiation pattern at frequencies of 3 GHz, 6 GHz and 9 GHz. The developed antenna has great potential for military and cognitive radio applications. Keywords- compact antenna, reconfigurable antenna, multiband antenna

INTRODUCTION

Reconfigurable antenna reveals various beneficial compared to the conventional antenna at the same class. It achieved multi function for a similar antenna. Moreover, the antenna size and cost can be minimized contrast to the separate task of the conventional antenna. The application of reconfigurable antenna is not only limited for the surveillance, but it is reliable for the military communication as well. The dynamically reconfigurable antenna can be comprehended via RF switches such as PIN diodes, MEMs and GaAs FETs. By changing the switch state to either ‘ON’ or ‘OFF’ mode, these elements capable for frequency tuning [1 - 5] and practical for impedance matching devices [6 - 7]. This paper presented the novel compact antenna performance with the ability of reconfigurable multi-bands application incorporates the RF switches. This has successfully realized by employing three switches through specified PIN diodes configurations at ideal location ultimately perform five frequency operating agilities. Those frequencies are band 1 (2.72 - 11.8GHz), band 2 (2.4 – 4GHz, 5.3 - 11.6GHz), band 3 (2.7 - 6.5GHz, 7.1 – 11.6GHz), band 4
