A diplomacia portuguesa no reinado de D. Afonso V (1448-1481)

A pesquisa investiga diferentes aspectos da prática diplomática quatrocentista, estruturando-se em três eixos: as instituições que assessoravam o monarca nos assuntos diplomáticos; os homens escolhidos como embaixadores; e as práticas diplomáticas, entendidas como os mecanismos de negociação e as cerimônias da diplomacia. Buscou-se, desta maneira, compreender o funcionamento da diplomacia numa épocaconsiderada como passagem da diplomacia medieval para a diplomacia moderna, notando ainda o seu papel como campo de exercício e afirmação do poder régio português. O recorte temporal concentra-se no reinado de D. Afonso V, tendo comoponto de partida o fim da regência (1448) e, como limite, a morte do monarca (1481). Fez-se uso de diferentes documentações, como crônicas, narrativas de viagens, tratados,genealogias e fontes normativas. Esse variado corpus documental permitiu alcançar diferentes aspectos da diplomacia medieval quatrocentista, notando a importânciainstitucional na condução dos assuntos externos, o crescente impacto da diplomacia para as finanças do reino, a definição de um perfil de embaixador letrado associado ao espaço cortesão, o uso de diferentes mecanismos de negociação, e a promoção da imagem externa do reino através das cerimônias diplomáticas.Palavras-chave: Portugal – D. Afonso V – Diplomacia The research investigates different aspects of the fifteenth diplomatic practice, and it is structured in three areas: the institutions that advise the monarch in diplomatic affairs; men chosen as ambassadors; and diplomatic practices, understood as the trading mechanisms and ceremonies of diplomacy. We sought in this way to understand the workings of diplomacy at a time considered as a passage from medieval to modern diplomacy, noting also its role as an exercise field and affirmation of the Portuguese royal power. The time frame focuses on the reign of King Afonso V, taking as its starting point the end of the regency (1448) and, as a limit, the death of the monarch (1481). There was use of different documentation, such as chronicles, travel narratives, treaties, genealogies and regulatory sources. This varied documentary corpus allowed us to achieve different aspects of the fifteenth medieval diplomacy, noting the institutional importance in the conduct of foreign affairs, the growing impact of diplomacy on the realm of finance, the definition of a literate ambassador profile associated with the courtly space, the use of different mechanisms of negotiation and the promotion of the external image of the kingdom through the diplomatic ceremonies.Portugal – D.
