A first week in Munchen, Germany


Returning to India and Bangladesh in winter, 2011, American artist Suzanne Benton revisits the changing light from dawn to dark, the mix of birds, abundant plants, astonishing trees, web of traffic, colorful shops, vibrant displays of patterned fabrics, mix of dusty wares, and most of all, the expressive faces of people. With a deep interest in Indian myths and epic poems, she finds delight in naming her artworks after heroes and heroines of the past, names still charged with hope and symbolic meaning and filled with ancient worlds once inhabited.
Beyond creating metal masks (and one of porcelain), monoprints, paintings, and Portrait Boxes, she leads Mask/Story and Secret Future Workshops while happily re-connecting with friends from trips in the 1970's and 1990's. A constant observer, Suzanne juxtaposes her experiences present and past in South Asia with a reportage on its vastly changing world.
