FORWARD Archaeologists, art historians, ceramologists, chemistry specialists, museologists, art collectors and other people joined, May 22-25 2013, at the Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga, with the purpose of studying Portuguese faience. The idea of a congress that would involve different researchers from different areas of knowledge started to gain form in 2004, together with the ceramic curator of that National Museum, at that time, Rafael Salinas Calado. No longer among us, this congress was dedicated to him. In fact that art historian was indeed one of the first to actually realize how important archaeological studies were in the understanding of Portuguese faience. Diverse years have passed and during several undergrad and master students and PhD researchers studied Portuguese faience producing a large number dissertations most of the supervised by one of the editors (R.V.G.) at the NOVA University of Lisbon. This congress was made together with the exhibition ‘On the World’s routes – Portuguese faience (16th-18th centuries)’ which allowed to fully understand the diffusion of Portuguese faience through pre-existing trading routes such as the ones where sugar, salt, gold and spice and even cod fish were traded. This exhibition was only possibly due to the Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia and its financial support of the project ‘Portuguese Faience in the World’ (PTDC/HIS-ARQ/111740/2009). Without this support it would have been impossible to fulfil this objective and, in particular, to identify so many places around the world with the presence of Portuguese faience, something that was only reachable due to the project team but with the help of numerous archaeologists and museum curators from many different countries. Presently Portuguese faience is already displayed in several Portuguese and foreign museums. The existing archaeological evidence permitted to identify workshops, to study and date more precisely artefacts that were considered to have a wide chronological spectrum and, until recently, assumed to have a feeble archaeological and historical interest. This project also directed the research team in a very interesting goal with the demonstration that Portuguese faience had a huge widespread in all the territories where Portuguese settle or traded with. Such widespread of a ceramic product could only be compared to what happened with terra sigillata in the Roman world, Chinese porcelain and to Dutch delftware. Fifty nine talks were presented during this First International Congress of Portuguese Faience though only forty nine papers were published, twenty six of those in English, eighteen in Portuguese and the remaining in Spanish. This investigation presents the state of the art in the studies of Portuguese faience and demonstrates as well the vitally of these ceramic studies with the presence of researchers from nine different countries, some of them from the other side of the Atlantic such as Canada, United States, Uruguay and Brazil. From Africa papers were presented of finds from Ceuta and the Eastern coast, missions made by Portuguese scholars and from Asia the former Portuguese territories of Goa and Macau. The international widespread of Portuguese faience was thus confirmed, though many evidence is clearly yet to be discovered or identified. At the end of the Congress most of the participants agreed that some measures must be taken to study and publish the collections of Portuguese faience kept at Portuguese and foreign museums, and other collections, most of them not available to the public. On the other hand it would be important that archaeological excavations made in Early Modern contexts should have in the team at least one archaeologist with knowledge of such artefacts and the history of such chronologies, permitting that final reports obey to the legislation that requires the correct identification and classification of finds, as demanded by the Heritage Office (Direcção Geral do Património Cultural/Secretaria de Estado da Cultura). The present proceedings permit to transmit a new idea of what in fact is Portuguese faience, its raw-material, shapes, decorations, functions and even symbolisms, and also distribution networks and consumption patterns, preparing the path for future investigations. One of such aspects is clearly related with the use of chemical methodologies to distinguish between the three main production centres: Lisbon, Coimbra and Vila Nova. As aforementioned, all the researchers that participated in this congress permitted it to become a fair homage to Rafael Salinas Calado, one of the main researchers in the study of Portuguese faience in recent times.
