In copla 13 of the Coplas, Manrique refers to the soul/body dichotomy with a metaphor that identifies the body with a "sierva" and the soul with a "señora."  This article explores the sources of this metaphor and traces its roots to a general condemnation of cosmetics in ancient literature before considering the proper adornments for the soul.
