This article reviews the main factors conditioning the evolution of Catalan and Castilian in Catalonian at the beginning of this 3rd millennium, including (a) the tension between autonomy and heteronomy, (b) the evolution of internal diversity, (c) resistance to castilianisation of Catalan, (d) impact of new speakers, and (e) the actual possibilities for Catilian to develop autonomously from Spanish Castilian.
