Preface

VII Iberoamerican conference on phase equilibria and fluid properties for process design

Keywords: Thermodynamics; Phase Equilibria; Process design; Simulation

In April 1983 the third International Conference on Properties of Fluids and Phase Equilibria for Chemical Process Design was held. This event stimulated the Latinoamerican participants to organize an International Course on the Thermodynamics of Phase Equilibria in Bah´ıa Blanca (Argentina), in July 1984. This course was presented by an outstanding group of teachers: Bob Heidemann, Helmuth Knapp, Hendrick Van Ness, Juan Vera, Aage Fredenslund and Peter Rasmussen. The course of 1984, brought a large number of participants from industry and universities and gave the chance to program scientific and technical interchange activities in the field of vapor–liquid equilibrium for process design. This was the first step for the series of EQUIFASE Conferences reported below: EQUIFASE 1987: EQUIFASE 1990: EQUIFASE 1992: EQUIFASE 1995: EQUIFASE 1999: EQUIFASE 2002:

Concepci´on, Chile Salvador de Bah´ıa, Brazil Oaxaca, M´exico Caracas, Venezuela Vigo, Spain Foz de Iguazu (Brazil, Argentine)

The general purpose of the EQUIFASE Conference is to promote the Scientific and Technologic interchange between scientists and professionals from Ibero and Latin America in the field of Equilibrium Phase Thermodynamics and Chemical Process Design. The main topics of these meetings are related to measurement, modeling and prediction of physical–chemical properties concerning processes involving oil and gas, petrochemicals, polymeric chemicals, food and biocompounds. In these cited areas, experts discuss the needs and opportunities of new developments that are pointed out through plenary lectures. Oral and poster presentations of original research works are presented during the conference, with ample time being left for comments and discussions. During the 2002 EQUIFASE conference that took place in Foz do Iguac¸u (Brazil)/Puerto Iguac¸u (Argentina) Mexico was 0378-3812/$ – see front matter © 2007 Elsevier B.V. selected to organize the 2005 EQUIFASE conference. As the tentative organizing committee was unable, for different reasons, to succeed in the organization of the event, the “Virtual Committee” headed by Esteban Brignole decided in September 2004 to ask to Luis Galicia-Luna to organize the meeting in 2006. This invitation was accepted and Luis Galicia-Luna had a meeting with professors Delia Moreno Juarez and Medardo Serna Gonzalez from “The Universidad Michoacana de San Nicol´as de Hidalgo” to check if this conference could be hosted in Morelia. Delia Moreno Juarez, Director of the Faculty of Chemistry, gave quickly a positive answer. The site of Morelia was a good choice as it is full of history. In fact its small tranquil streets are silent witnesses of the history that has been gathered in every corner and every spot. The distinctive color of its beautiful constructions, made unmistakably of solid quarry, has earned it the nickname of “Ciudad Rosa” (Pink City). Morelia City is located at an altitude of 1951 m and has a population of approximately one million people. In 1991 the UNESCO declared the historical center of Morelia as a World Heritage site. Close to Morelia the sanctuary of the Monarca Butterfly is found, a forest that turns into orange and black colors when butterflies arrive for reproduction. All sessions were held at the University’s Cultural Center of the Michoacan’s University of San Nicolas de Hidalgo. This building features a beautiful contemporary style; its main objective is the diffusion of arts and culture. In its facilities, several events are hold, such as: painting expositions, book expositions, and expositions of documents about important characters concerning the history of Michoacan. Many people, many more than we are able to mention here, contributed to the organization of the 2006 EQUIFASE meeting. First, we wish to thank the scientific and organizing committees for their excellent support. In particular, we thank Prof. Esteban A. Brignole for his efforts to organize this edition of the meeting in Mexico despite earlier problems.

The participants of this conference could exchange ideas with a distinguished group of invited speakers from Spain, Brazil, Argentina, the United States, The Netherlands, France, and Mexico, thanks to financial support of the Conacyt. The invited speakers were: Luis A. Galicia-Luna (Mexico), Theo W. de Loos (The Netherlands), M. Angela A. Meireles (Brazil), Cor J. Peters (The Netherlands), Dominique Richon (France), Fernando del Rio Haza (Mexico), Stanley I. Sandler (USA) and Lourdes F. Vega (Spain). The organizing committee is very pleased to have received more than 150 researchers from Mexico, Latin America, the United States, France, Spain, The Netherlands and Portugal as conference speakers at the 2006 EQUIFASE meeting. Acknowledgements We thank Ms. Nayeli Jimenez Galicia, who was responsible for the conference website. We also wish to acknowledge Mr. Felix F. Betancourt-C´ardenas for his help, as assistant to Luis A. Galicia-Luna and for preparing the Proceedings CD-ROMs, Prof. Jose Luis Rico Cerda (Co-Chairman) and Delia Moreno
