Descripción

The Biblioteca Capitular of Sigüenza (Guadalajara) has recently addedan antiphonary fragment copied around 1100 to its medieval collection. The main value of the manuscript is that it contains a hitherto unknown office of St James the Apostle that has interesting concordances with the Codex Calixtinus. The notable Iberian character of the repertoire, in addition to its early dating, suggest the possibility that its melodies may include traces of the Old Hispanic chant. Based on this specific case, this article aims to reflect upon the extent to which new Iberian composition for the Roman Rite —after its adoption as the official rite in Castile ca. 1080— was open to Old Hispanic melodic structures. The analysis seeks to determine the filiation —Hispanic or Gregorian— of this Jacobean repertoire and to explore its origins as far back as possible.
