Many students dislike English. They believe this subject to be boring at best and unnecessary at worst. Other students, however, find that the reading and writing skills they developed in their English classes are useful ones. From 1972 to 1976, I attended an inner-city high school in Chicago. The school was located in an area that was rapidly changing from residential to commercial. It was an old, respected school that had formerly educated the children of the families in the neighborhood. Many of the teachers were dedicated, competent professionals, who had taught in this school for years. Others were inexperienced, young teachers who were encountering their first students. However, neither the experienced nor the inexperienced teachers were able to handle the undisciplined, unmotivated students who attended their classes. As a result, discipline problems created a poor environment for learning in the high school.
