Descripción

The production of portraits of the youngest members of the royal family enjoyed great prominence throughout the history of court portraiture in the Early Modern period. This is reflected in the documentation from the reign of Philip III of Spain and Margaret of Austria, who took great care and interest in shaping an appropriate image for their eight children from birth. Although the portraits produced during the lactation period were mainly for family viewing, these works are subject to the formal and iconographic standards of the official portrait whose ultimate aim is to show regal majesty.
