Material research and product development

Plastic wood composite:

Plywood cladding, tongue and grove Luann veneered cladding sheets were custom manufactured in 40 foot lengths using a continuous press this was done together with a profiled plywood window and door system: Jonathan Levi Architects Progressive Architecture City of Wood 2/1994

Plywood Box Beam structure:

Cardboard: Plasticized cardboard emergency housing, wall system, floor system, block wall system, resin coated cardboard matrix cladding forms.

Three-dimensional MDF/ oriented strand, engineered timber. The lessons learned about core structures in the cardboard research led to an interest in developing core structures in wood and reed products.

Magnesium Phosphate Cements Ceramic Cements:

Emergency Housing: One-year post-doc in the Building Technology Department at the Technical University, Delft, the Netherlands. I collaborated with Mic Eckhout and Fons Verheijen to develop new building applications for recycled cardboard. The project shown here was developed for the International Red Cross. 2006-2007.

Container Buildings: Over the past ten years, I have experimented with a series of designs utilizing recycled shipping containers. Directly below is Thrive which was a design for a vocational training school for Kip Karn Estates in Eldoret, Kenya. Below that is a project for artists’ housing and workshop space at the Franconia Sculpture Park in Minnesota. Beneath, are photographs of the Washington State University Sailing Club building designed and constructed in my Design/Build Studio, 2010.

Selected International Peer Reviewed Exhibitions

Sculpture by the Sea, Bondi, “ Once Removed” my piece was selected to be shown from a pool of 600 entries. It features cast glass feet on the rocks at Marks Point. October 2013.

Architecture Tomorrow Today! Curated by D. A. Barnstone and R. V. Barnstone. Centennial Hall, Wroclaw, Poland. Permanent exhibition on innovative contemporary architecture around the world. August-December 2011.

Text and Context Conference at the University of Paris, June 2003. I installed a site specific sculpture as a permanent feature at the Cité Universitaire (the university campus ) Summer 2003.
