Along the various editions of EPIA the scientific program comprised invited lectures, tutorials, parallel workshops, and paper presentations. The success of the workshop format, since it was adopted by the conference, motivated the organizers of the previous and current editions to generalize the adoption of this model for scientific presentations, leaving the plenary sessions for invited lectures, tutorials, posters and panels. As expected, although a significant number of workshops are accepted in each edition of EPIA, they do not cover all areas of AI. Another peculiarity of the workshop format is that the areas that are addressed differ substantially from one edition to another. The General Artificial Intelligence Workshop (GAIW 2005) appears in this context. It shares many aspects with the previous plenary scientific sessions, with the advantage of using a structure similar to the other workshops. This guarantees that all areas of Artificial Intelligence, not covered by the remaining workshops, including theoretical areas, foundational areas, and applications have space in the event. For GAIW 2005 we received 19 submissions from 8 countries with Portugal, Brazil and Spain being the most contributing countries. The topics addressed by the papers included in these proceedings are: Automated Reasoning, Case-based Reasoning, Common Sense Reasoning, Computer Vision, Knowledge Representation, Logic Programming, Machine Learning, Natural Language Generation, Non-monotonic Reasoning, and Perception. Each paper was blindly reviewed by three senior program committee members. From the 19 submitted papers, 8 high quality full papers were selected for publication in the Springer LNCS main volume of the conference proceedings, while 5 papers were selected for the local UBI/IEEE proceedings. We would like to thank all the authors who submitted their work to the workshop, giving a strong reason for the realization of GAIW 2005. We would also like to give special thanks to all the members of the Program Committee who guaranteed the high quality of the workshop.
