PhD Experience Conference

The University of Hull’s Graduate School is holding a three day conference for current, prospective and post-doctoral researchers, academics and professionals to explore all aspects of the PhD process. The conference will provide a stimulating environment for delegates to develop their understanding of the PhD process by sharing in the experiences of others. The conference is designed so that delegates will acquire knowledge and skills for their own research from across the disciplines. The conference will centre on a number of themed workshops covering the whole PhD experience. The themes will be co-ordinated by academic leads and will be complemented by student presentations. This call for papers is for current PhD students or post-doctoral researchers to present a paper of no more than 15 minutes in length on one of the following topics. The papers must be accessible to delegates from all disciplines, and therefore your focus should be on your own general experience and not your specific subject or research project. Theme 1: Networking Elements of communication and networking; collaboration across disciplines; building useful links in the research community; traversing academic divides  Theme 2: Reflection The art of reflection; reflecting on the research process; producing effective action plans; the importance of self-awareness for achieving research goals Theme 3: The Research Process Skills and techniques for research; the stages of research; managing the research process; overcoming difficulties and barriers Theme 4: Writing process and publishing as you go Writing techniques; writing for different audiences; academic writing; writing for publication; dealing with feedback and criticism; getting published Theme 5: Research Perspectives Research methodologies and philosophies; qualitative and quantitative methods; managing different types of sources Theme 6: Viva Voce Experiences of the viva voce (positive or negative); overcoming the fear of viva voce; skills and techniques for viva voce; preparing for the viva voce Theme 7: Career Management – From Here to There This session will consist of several speakers from industry and academia describing their paths from the PhD to their chosen careers.
