On Latvian Entiminae (Coleoptera: Curculionidae): 2. E-mail: [email protected] Abstract. New faunal data on eight species of the tribes Trachyphloeini and Sciaphilini are presented. A total of 471 specimens of these tribes were reviewed. Bibliographical information on these groups in Latvia is summarised for the first time. The first records of Trachyphloeus heymesi Hubenthal, 1934 and Barypeithes mollicomus (Ahrens, 1812), in the Latvian fauna are reported. One species, Trachyphloeus spinimanus Germar, 1824, is excluded from the list of Latvian Coleoptera. The annotated list including 12 species and the illustrated key of Latvian Trachyphloeini and Sciaphilini are given. Introduction This publication continues our study on weevils of the Latvian fauna (Balalaikins (in press)). There are 13 genera and approximately 247 species of Trachyphloeini known from the Palaearctic region (Borovec 2009). In northern Europe, Trachyphloeini are represented by nine species (Silfverberg 2004) and in Latvia by five species. The tribe Sciaphilini in the Palaearctic region comprises 30 genera (Alonso-Zarazaga & Lyal 1999) including the genus Brachysomus Schönherr, 1823 with 48 species (Holecova et al. 2008; Benedikt 2009), genus Sciaphilus Schönherr,  1823 with 10 species (Bajtenov 1974), and genus Barypeithes Jacquelin du Val,  1854 with approximately 37 species (Lachowska et al. 2005). Ten species and six genera of Sciaphilini are known to occur in northern Europe (Silfverberg 2004) and three genera with four species are reported for the Latvian fauna (Telnov 2004). In adjacent territories, the number of recorded Trachyphloeini and Sciaphilini species slightly varies: nine species and five genera are recorded in Belarus (Alexandrovich et al. 1996), six species and three genera in Estonia (Silfverberg 2004), and 11 species and five genera in Lithuania (Tamutis et al. 2011). The first information on species of Trachyphloeini and Sciaphilini in Latvia was published at the beginning of the 19th century (Fleischer 1829). More than 10 studies appeared in Latvia subsequently. Barševskis (1997) compiled the list of Latvian Curculionidae including eight species of these tribes with faunal data on seven of them. Fragmentary faunal data can be also found in the

following articles: Barševskis (1993); Lackschewitz and Mikutowicz (1939); Varzinska and Milenders (1981). The aim of the current paper is to summarize the information available on Trachyphloeini and Sciaphilini in Latvia. The bibliographical information on this weevil subfamily in Latvia is compiled for the first time. The annotated list and the illustrated key to Latvian species are presented.

Material and methods A total of 471 specimens were reviewed in the current study. The examined material is deposited in the collection of the Institute of Systematic Biology of Daugavpils University (DUBC, Daugavpils, Latvia), the entomological collection of the Institute of Biology of the Latvian University (LUBI, Salaspils, Latvia), the collection of the Latvian Natural History Museum (LDM, Rīga, Latvia), A.  Barševskis’ (Daugavpils, Latvia), and C. Müthel’s (Latvian Natural History Museum, Rīga, Latvia) collections, and the author’s collection (Daugavpils, Latvia). The following keys were used for species identification: (Dieckmann 1980; Hoffmann 1958; Kippenberg 1981; Morris 1997; Palm 1996; Smreczynski 1966; Yunakov  2003). We followed the systematics suggested by Silfverberg (2004) and Borovec (2009). The nomenclature and synonymy used are in compliance with Borovec (2009) and Alonso-Zarazaga and Lyal (1999). The general distribution of species and host plants is presented in the following works: Borovec 2009; Dieckmann 1980; Hoffmann 1950; Kippenberg 1981; Legalov 2010; Palm 1996;

Smreczynski 1966; Yunakov 2003. The classification of chorotypes follows the one suggested by Vigna Taglianti et al. (1999). The transcript of chorotypes codes is as follows: EUR – European, NEU – N-European, PAL – Palaearctic, SIE – Sibero-European, TUE – Turano-European. The following information is given for each species: scientific name & author, published bibliographical sources for Latvia, faunal data (sampling locality and date, number of collected specimens in parentheses, information on the habitat and the collector’s name), host plants, phenology (Latvian data only; IV, VI, VII, VIII, IX, X, XI – months from March to November respectively; in parentheses – ten-day period), general distribution of species and the chorotype code. The species marked with dashes (–) was previously reported for the Latvian fauna, but, in fact, it is absent from Latvia, as the previous record was based on misidentification. This species is herewith excluded from the list of Latvian Coleoptera. The abbreviations used stand for: d. – district (the system of administrative districts used in Latvia from 1991 to 2008), env. – environs, Isl. – island, NP – Nature Park, NR – Nature Reserve, S – South, N – North, E – East, W – West. The photos were taken with a Nikon digital camera using a stereomicroscope Nikon SMZ 745T.

Results and discussion The current research confirmed the occurrence of eight species of Trachyphloeini and Sciaphilini in Latvia. Two species, Trachyphloeus heymesi Hubenthal, 1934 and Barypeithes mollicomus (Ahrens, 1812) are reported for the Latvian fauna for the first time. Trachyphloeus spinimanus Germar, 1824 was removed from the list of Latvian Coleoptera. One specimen of this species was reported for Latvia (Barševskis 1997), but this record was based on misidentification. Trachyphloeus digitalis Gyllenhal, 1827 is mentioned only in old bibliographical sources (Seidlitz 1872–1875, 1887–1891; Rathlef 1905) and in the published catalogues of Latvian Coleoptera (Telnov et al. 1997; Telnov 2004), Romualdius angustisetulus Hansen, 1915 is mentioned only in Telnov’s (2004) catalogue. The occurrence of these species in Latvia needs confirmation. Overall, the list of Trachyphloeini and Sciaphilini species of Latvian fauna includes ten species and six genera. The analysis of species distribution of the tribes Trachyphloeini and Sciaphilini in Latvia reveals that the

Sciaphilini triboms. Iš viso buvo peržiūrėti 471 šių tribų vabalai. Bibliografinė informacija apie Latvijos faunai priklausančius šių grupių vabalus yra apibendrinta pirmą kartą. Pirmą kartą Latvijoje užregistruotos straubliukų rūšys Trachyphloeus heymesi Hubenthal, 1934 ir Barypeithes mollicomus (Ahrens, 1812). Viena rūšis Trachyphloeus spinimanus Germar, 1824 yra išbraukta iš Latvijos vabalų sąrašo.
