Modernizing Public Holidays in the USA ~ La modernización de los días festivos en los EE.UU. Many will resist my opinion, but it is a new world out there, and we Americans should lead my example; rather than follow dogmatically. My observation is youth embraces improvements through change while the older we become the more we resist it. Let’s start with the simple term America and Americans, we in the USA claim it, use it and most of the world uses it. The reality though is neither word is exclusively ours. Canada and Mexico are certainly part of North America as well are they not? Technically Central American, South American and Caribbean countries are also American. Allowing this misrepresentation to continue is a bit arrogant and exclusionary to our fellow South, Central and North Americans. We consider the USA a secular country where religious and cultural freedoms are an important theme of our Bill of Rights and Constitution. However, make no mistake the United States is a Christian country that touts Christian morals and Christian laws. The definition of Secularism for me is allowing all faiths and cultures to practice and grow while respecting the democratic realities. India for example is a secular country; but certainly it has a larger Hindu identity than Muslim, Buddhist or Christian. There is nothing wrong with the USA having Christmas as a major holiday or India having Diwali as a major holiday, because both are secular democracies. Let’s look at the US holidays: Consideramos que el EE.UU. un país laico donde las libertades religiosas y culturales son un tema importante de nuestra Declaración de Derechos y la Constitución. Memorial and Labor Day are not only significant freedom days historically, they also bookend summer, thus well thought and logical, Veterans Day and Independence Day completes this patriotic quartet. The fragmentation and debate comes with Washington and Lincoln’s birthday in some states combined as Presidents Day; other states they are alternated and some replaced. The other controversy and fragmentation comes

from Martin Luther King Jr. Day that is not celebrated or recognized in all states. Columbus Day is the enigma. Therefore we have three holidays or more correctly holiday slots to fix. Consider the fact that Columbus did not discover the US or America, the Native Americans were already here. The Clovis people from Russia came across the Bering Strait. Columbus also has the notoriety of enslaving and murdering natives; the Spanish Inquisition was represented on his three ships. Certainly Italy and Spain made significant contributions to colonizing, yet that is not always a positive. Any scholar would agree Columbus does not warrant a national holiday and I agree. Now moving to Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a great citizen of massive importance most would agree, although several US states do not recognize this holiday. The first problem is it is a divisive day celebrating one race and not even the dominate

race in the USA. In the western states they are passionate about Cesar Chavez and Latinos are the significant demographic now and in the future. It is in my opinion unwise to segregate any ethnicity or race for this honor. Strong cases can be made for women and a suffrage day or simply an equality day. Why I like Equality Day is it honors all. Ahora se mueve a Martin Luther King Jr., un gran ciudadano de enorme importancia mayoría estaría de acuerdo, aunque varios estados de Estados Unidos no reconocen este día de fiesta. The final day is Presidents Day and this is a highly subjective title that suggests entry is already closed. Sure, I am a Lincoln guy, but I see the value of Washington as well. However I also see Jefferson, Adams, FDR and many other presidents’ contributions. My opinion is I would replace this day entirely, largely because there are significant monuments to our presidents. I would add a theme everyone could and should agree deserves recognition, Nature. Without Nature there would be n patriotic days, and Nature is something that not only deserves our respect but it needs our respect. El último día es Día de los Presidentes y esto es un título muy subjetiva que indica la entrada ya está cerrado. Claro, yo soy un tipo Lincoln, pero no veo el valor de Washington también. Sin embargo también veo Jefferson, Adams, FDR y las contribuciones de muchos otros presidentes. Mi opinión es que reemplazaría el día de hoy en su totalidad, en gran parte porque hay monumentos significativos a nuestros presidentes.
