He was President of Sicily, Viceroy of Catalonia and Governor of Milan, among the highest occupations he had. This paper aims to analyze an aspect of the cultural background of the I Duke of Terranova on which historiography has put scarce emphasis: the books collected by Carlos de Aragón in his library, with a particular focus on the volumes on Architecture and Fortification, Military Art and Cosmography. This knowledge was of great importance in the development of his political governance work tasks. Thus, the analysis of the great amount of books on these subjects he owned, will allow to better understand the personality of this important nobleman and ruler and to more precisely know his scientific interests in architectural and military expertise.
