The “new ochavillos”. An atypical coin issue.During the reign of Felipe IV we habitually identify three periods in his monetary policy. The intermediate period stretches from the suspension of the copper coin released in 1626 and the resumption of the new series in 1660, a time characterized by the repeated usage of the mints to alter the copper coinage in circulation by means of countermarking. However, several years ago, some exceptional mintages were identified dating from this time. Foremost among these is the minting of a coin of two maravedís, struck simultaneously with the countermarking of 1651. On that specific occasion, data was provided to justify its existence. Now we hope to enlarge upon the facts surrounding this coin by providing more detailed information on how it was made, the quantities produced by each of the mints, and by offering a catalog of impressions.
