Descripción

History of power offers important viewpoints to explain Old Regime societies. This historical approach offers the chance of getting a diverse and dynamic perspective of the political structure as well as on political culture and everyday practices in the territories of the Spanish Monarchy. The relational study of hierarchical power structures –households, local, provincial and royal institutions –shows different itineraries –both informal and official– for the developing of government practice. Paying attention to interpersonal links of loyalty and patronage makes easy the explanation of the principles that made closer the power relationships between the Crown and the provincial spheres within the so complex political structure as it was the Spanish Monarchy. Then concepts such as obedience, respect, fidelity, the search of consent or arbitrage were in the very center of the political lexicon to solve political tensions and conflict by using both formal (institutions) informal (patronage networks) ways. These both spheres were essential to strengthen, on one hand, central royal justiceand grace and, on the other hand, provincial authorities and government.
