Descripción

The relevance of the medallion of Julius Caesar in the cloister of the Cathedral of Santiago lies in its antiquarian appearance and its relatively early chrolnology in the Spanish art-historical context. Taking as a starting point this medallion, which links the historical figure to the patron of the work, Don Alonso de Fonseca, this paper has two objectives: on the one hand, to explore the possible iconographic sources, both in medals and in the numismatic bibliography of the sixteenth century, and on the other, to contextualize the work, reviewing the image of Julius Caesar in the Renaissance, the values it represented and the contexts in which it appears.
