English Y Espanol~ Christmas Eve in Cuba ~ La Nochebuena en Cuba The year was 1994 and suddenly to the amazement of many Habaneros, Christmas began slowly making a return to Havana. The official religion of Cuba remained Atheist but as the holiday approached the government no longer shunned those who choose to display a string of lights, a makeshift wreath or a manger in their windows. How had this mystery come about; like many mysteries the answer was complex and a convergence of several factors. The first was the Soviet Union had ended in 1991 and though its lingering alliance with Cuba weakened, Russia did not completely abandon its interests in Cuba until early 1994. The second factor was my friend Jaime Ortega was elevated to the rank of Cardinal in November from Arch Bishop. The third factor was The Vatican led by the vibrant leadership of Pope John Paul ll was reaching out, building bridges, and showing a remarkable creativity for repair and restoration.

Era el año 1994 y de repente ante el asombro de muchos habaneros, Navidad comenzó a hacer lentamente una vuelta a La Habana. La religión oficial de Cuba siguió siendo ateo, sino como el día de fiesta se acercó al gobierno ya no rehuía los que optan por mostrar una cadena de luces, una corona de expediente o un pesebre en sus ventanas. ¿Cómo había llegado sobre este misterio; como muchos misterios que la respuesta era complejo y una convergencia de varios factores. El primero fue la Unión Soviética había terminado en 1991 y aunque su alianza persistente con Cuba se debilitó, Rusia no abandonó completamente sus intereses en Cuba hasta principios de 1994. Fidel himself is a practitioner of Santeria, yet he is far from fanatical. The complexity is exactly how much Yoruba or Africans is in the caldron or for that matter how much Catholicism is in the caldron. Generally, if we take an average Santeria is about one third Catholicism and two thirds African Diaspora religion. To understand any country, we must study its culture, its religion and its history. In the case of Cuba the Diaspora religion of the Yoruba came on the backs of slaves during the time of the heinous Spanish Inquisition. Convert or be burned at the stake left little choice and thus the Africans hid their venerable Orishas, Ancestors and The Dead inside Catholicism and lived. The religions flourished and outlived The Spanish Inquisition, just as it is outliving Cuba’s period of Atheism. Or does it stop or start in Cuba with music and dance; the venerable Orishas are as familiar and influential as Jesus Christ himself.
