El patronato en la erección de la diócesis de Montevideo: el caso del Cabildo Eclesiástico y el Seminario Conciliar

Este artículo trata sobre la gestión del obispado y la creación de la diócesis de Montevideo (1878) durante el gobierno del coronel Lorenzo Latorre, considerando la responsabilidad que en su éxito tuvieron el Gobierno, la Iglesia en Uruguay y la Santa Sede en Roma. Con este objetivo, el análisis se centra en las dificultades originadas al llevar a cabo la instalación del Cabildo Eclesiástico y del Seminario Conciliar, según lo habíadispuesto la bula de erección papal a principios del siglo xix. Se muestra aquí cómo el llamado derecho de Patronato sostenido por el Estado condicionó el pleno desarrollo institucional de la diócesis de Montevideo. *This paper is about how the office of the Bishop was managed and the Diocese of Montevideo created (1878) during the administration of coronel Lorenzo Latorre, considering how the government, the Church in Uruguay, and the Holy See in Rome contributed to its success. It analyzes the difficulties of installing the Ecclesiastical Council and the Conciliar Seminary, as disposed by the Papal Bull at the beginning of the 19thcentury. The paper shows how the sustained right of  patronage of the State conditioned the institutional development of the Montevideo Diocese.
