Descripción

This research shows the earnings distribution by subgroups of formal and informal workers located at the northern border of Mexico and Sonora. It is observed more informal participation of both agricultural and self-employed workers. The Encuesta Nacional de Ocupación y Empleo 2006 –ENOE– is used to estimate a counterfactual scenario, assuming what would happen with the informal distribution if workers decide to become formal employees. Results point out an improvement in the informal sector for the wage-earners and the self-employed; meanwhile a lower impact is found for the self-employed in Sonora as well as for the agricultural workers in both the northern border and Sonora. It is observed that for self-employed individuals located at the top of the distribution in Sonora do not substantially change their incomes, as well as an increase on income polarization for the wage-earners in the border region.
