Cien años de debate en torno a la tesis weberiana sobre la ética protestante

RESUMEN Adelanto de una más amplia investigación, este artículo ofrece como muestra algunas malas lecturas a las que se prestó la tesis weberiana sobre la ética protes-tante durante la década de los sesenta, cuando se intentó extrapolarla a casos no contemplados por el propio Weber o que caían fuera de los parámetros espa-cio-temporales expresamente fijados por él para juzgar la validez de su tesis. Con los ejemplos seleccionados se demuestra lo fructífero de la tesis weberiana como fuente de inspiración para nuevas investigaciones, pero también la irrelevancia de éstas para confirmar o refutar la validez intrínseca de la tesis misma. ABSTRACT Advancing materials from a broader research project, this article offers a sample of some erroneous readings of Weber's thesis about the Protestant ethic produced during the 1960s when an attempt was made to extrapolate it to cases not dealt with by Weber himself or that fell outside of the time-space parameters that he expressly established for judging his hypothesis's validity. The examples selected show how fruitful Weber's hypothesis is as a source of inspiration for new research, but also how irrelevant the latter is for confirming or refuting the intrinsic validity of the hypothesis itself.
