MARIA CARMEN GARCIA RUIZ'S TRANSLATION STRATEGIES

A flamenco dancer. It was my first impression by looking at her walking along the corridors of the Faculty of Foreign Languages, a black – eyed girl whose brown hair struck me very much.
Carmen was born in Hinojosa del Duque and attended Còrdoba University where, in 1991, she graduated in Spanish and Philosophy with a specialization in Spanish Philology and Teaching Strategies, whereas in December 1992 she began to teach at Bari University.
Her own way of conceiving specialized translation, as well as lexis and terms, is an interesting experiment of fusion among different elements:
Grammar (syntax in particular);
Translation (Simultaneous and Consecutive);
Language Labs;
Spanish for Special Purposes (Art, Cuisine, Economy, Law, Literature, Science, Technique and Tourism);
History of Spanish;
Literary Analysis;
Words Processing;
Literary Texts Editing.
Carmen uses the so called hypertextual strategy in order to convey a meaning whichever with all its nuances, so being complete under each singular point of view. It is based on a continuous comparison between Spanish and Italian, two linguistic systems which have many things in common, though the former is more detailed than the latter because of its particular structure, as well as the presence of terms, that is, specific words broadening its already wide lexis.
Translating means bringing something beyond the limits of common shared knowledge, so understanding complex topics with a high moral value. Carmen does it with severity and rigor, without moving away from the true meaning of an either oral or written text. Her professionalism goes beyond the close boundaries of tradition so as to add freshness to Translation Studies, not only theory (papers, essays, lectures and so on), but also (and above all) practice.
