The traffic in relics from the Roman catacombs gave rise in Naples, around 1600, to a singular type of reliquary-bust imitating reliquaries made of precious metals. Some of the earliest sets of sculpted half bodies came to Spain: Valladolid, Medina de Pomar, Madrid and Monforte de Lemos. In 1608 Fray Juan López de Caparroso, Bishop of Monopoli, brought six reliquary-busts from Naples, one complete figure and several arm-reliquaries which were placed in an altarpiece dedicated to Saint Dominic of Guzmán in the Collegiate Church of Borja. From their style they can be linked to the work of Giovan Battista Gallone, one of themost active Neapolitan sculptors during the first decades of the 17th century.
