Descripción

Hidden in the dark waters of the Wingecarribbee River lie remains of watercraft built by German internees during the First World War. The camp was home to German mariners interned from merchant vessels and some POW's from the raider SMS Emden. During their stay at Berrima Gaol they built a fleet of fanciful watercraft used in colourful regattas and several were sunk in the river by War's end. One canoe was discovered in the 1970s and is now on display at the Berrima Historical Society. The Heritage Branch, Office of Environment and Heritage is leading archaeological surveys to locate the remains of these unique watercraft. The Berrima Camp site is listed on the State Heritage Register under the NSW Heritage Act 1977.
