Methods and material
Ethnographically informed fieldwork
Fieldwork: July – September 2013, February-March 2014
Semi-structured interviews: informants work with communication in different forms (culture promotion, radio, press-office)
Observation: settlement radios, press-offices, MST National Congress.

MST
Organised rural workers
Founded in 1984 – End of militar dictatorship
Promote agrarian reform (redistribution of land) and advocate rural worker's rights
Occupation of unused land as main form of action
Today: 900 settlements – 350,000 families, plus 90,000 families in camp-sites.
Present in 24 of 26 states.


Media activism(s)
Micro level: group or community – access to media and possibility for self representation

Macro level: political and symbolical representation in national and transnational public debates

Micro-level – participation / Macro-level – representation

Centrality of media – with a twist


Communication rights are crucial to participation – and political representation

But what are communication rights?

For MST militants structural reforms in the media system will grant communication rights

Communication rights and structural change in the political-economic system of media are relevant enough to canalize the actions of one Latin America's biggest social movement organizations.
Communication rights – especially outside the Western world – should occupy a more prominent place in research agendas.
The circumstantial media activist
A peasant's rights activist organization needs to become a media activist.
As long as there is no media regulation and ownership is concentrated MST will not be represented in public debates, despite access to technologies and own media production.

Not only MST, other social movements in Brazil are becoming media activists

In the view of MST militants the media are a key sector in a democracy – but they don't mean access to technologies but a plural media system where not only commercial interests are at stake.
